A few months ago, I decided to !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! an Omega Speedster Racing. While I love the watch and wear it nearly daily, another has since caught my eye, but has proven rather difficult to acquire...
Back in March, the biggest watch trade show in the world happened, Baselworld, where each of the major manufacturers unveiled their latest, greatest models. This year was no different with Omega releasing their new Speedmaster 57 line, which is sublime. Rolex updated their most iconic model, the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! as well as re-introduced a model that had been discontinued a few years earlier, the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Since laying eyes on the initial press photos back in march, I have deeply lusted for this watch. Unlike most manufacturers, Rolex has a very very tight control on product sales. The latest models initially only appear in Rolex Boutiques (there are only 12 in the country) and slowly trickle out to their dealers. As a result, the new models may take anywhere from 18-24 months before they may show up in smaller jewelers. After calling around to dozens of stores, I have sourced one, and it should be here on Friday.

I have 2 watches. A Swiss Military Titanium/Stainless Steel watch, and a cheap walmart watch for work (I work in a dish pit).

I like your Omega better, but it’s still a nice watch. Kudos for getting one that isn’t what most people who own a Rolex have or even know about. Really wasn’t expecting them to bring the Air King name back. Would love to see a review from you on it when you get it in. How much was the difference in price between your Omega and the Rolex? I saw the Rolex was supposed to be around $6,200 but I don’t know how much the other retailed for.

The Omega is a wonderfully beautiful watch with the unexpected benefit of matching my BMW which is in Estoril Blue. That being said, they retail for far more than they typically sell for used (in my case, retail was $5200, but I paid $2400 for it used.) This also applies to Breitling and Tag Heuer. This is largely due to the movements in the watches themselves. My Omega has a 3330 movement which is based in part on an ETA movement. That means, that Omega (which is a sub brand now of the Swatch Corp) buys their movements from ETA (Also of Swatch), and modifies them to Omega specifications. The build quality of the watch is superb, but given that the engineering is outsourced, it means that the lore for the watch takes a bit of a hit. In the case of Rolex, every one of their movements is made in house, and designed exclusively for Rolex. Many of your higher end brands are notorious for their in house movement development. Considering that your case and face are solely reflections of how well the mechanism functions, its not surprising that the watch’s value is largely affected by the engineering within the case. The AirKing is $6200 and considering that I sourced it out of state, will be shipped to me tax free.

Indeed. Nice color choice for both. $2,400 is not a bad price at all. I imagine it was only lightly used too since it wasn’t that old. The great thing about watches is that if kept in good shape they will still look beautiful 30 years on. I don’t see why it is such an issue whether or not a watch uses an in house movent or not, but I do see your point. Hell, even companies like Baume & Mercier, Hublot, IWC, etc don’t necessarily use am in house movement iirc, but kudos to Rolex for doing so.
You know, seeing what you had to say actually has given me a greater appreciation for Rolex. I know a lot of people buy one simply because of the name, but you obviously are not one of those. For that, I salute you.
